Question Trying to Refresh Win 8.1 But I get the error: the Windows drive is locked! Question How do I repair Windows Server 2019 ? Question How To Date Lifespan of a Windows PC? Question How to group drastically different Windows files separately ? If you leave it in that state for 2-3 minutes all icons would come back as the process would re-initiate itself. That is a really important process which must be kept running all the time and since it gets killed all icons and stuff disappear. Unfortunately the process is dwm (Windows Explorer). Again re start and see if problem Explanation - Your icons disappear because when you repeatedly press taskbar while it is unresponsive, windows decides to kill the process. Go to Startup tab and disable all the applications listed there (Windows 8 doesn't show important startup processes there so its safe). Restart your PC and let it keep running idle without touching anything for about 5 minutes.
That is because when you start your computer, a lot of programs also open up (start up?) and you don't give them enough time to initialize.
